Dante - Vergil battle 3 (M20)

Preferred style: Royalguard/Trickster

Avoid and Attack strategies:

  1. Judgement Cut – Shoots energy waves at you. These are easy to avoid. Just dash/run/jump away. Also, as always, it’s easiest to counter Vergil when he does this move. Get near him while evading the waves, then Stinger/Killer Bee/Reverb Shock him and continue spewing combos.

  2. Round Trip – He throws his sword at you like a boomerang, sometimes circling you for a bit before returning to him. Use Spiral or Kalina Ann to deflect the sword after Vergil throws it at you. Or, if you're already near him when he's still in his stance, counter with any melee move.

  3. Helm Breaker (+ Stinger) – He’ll teleport above you and do a Helm Breaker + Stinger . Jump away twice to avoid both moves. After evading, attack while he's recovering. Spamming Beowulf's Killer Bee is recommended. If you're a Royalguard person, guard both moves. It will take some practice.

  4. Rapid Slash – Vergil charges forward quickly, leaving a trail of slashes behind him. Jump out of the way, it's safer than rolling, then attack him when he's recovering. With Royalguard, as always, guard it if you can.

  5. Parry + Upper Slash/Rapid Slash – Vergil parries you every so often and may counter using his 2-hit slash combo (Upper Slash) or Rapid Slash attack. Usually, when he counters with Upper Slash, it's so quick you don’t have time to recover and avoid, so once parried, always try to (double) jump backwards away from him anyway, and you should be able to avoid it at least half the time. This will also easily avoid Rapid Slash. Otherwise, again, guard them with Royalguard. Once evaded, attack.

Note: Vergil grunts right before he parries. So long you don't hit him with any Devil Arm when he grunts, you will not have to deal with him parrying. Guns are the only way to safely inflict damage on him in this situation.

Note 2: Vergil grunts after receiving a certain number of hits. If you remember this and come up with a combo that ends at the right number of hits, you won't have to deal with accidentally being parried. For example, try these. Vergil WILL grunt right after the last move.

    1) Killer Bee + Beowulf 3 hit combo + Straight + Killer Bee + Straight + Stinger
    2) Killer Bee + Beowulf 3 hit combo + Straight + Reverb Shock + Straight
    3) Killer Bee + Beowulf 3 hit combo + Rising Dragon + Killer Bee + Straight + Stinger
    4) Killer Bee + Beowulf 3 hit combo + Rebellion combo I (2 hits) + Hightime + Killer Bee + Straight + Stinger

Note 3: Vergil isn't always that nice as to let you perform a chain of combos on him all the time. You find that very often, after you hit/counter him even once, he will grunt already. In such situations there isn't really anything you can do but to be patient and take the opportunity to shoot at him with your fire arms. Just be patient.

  6. Final Judgement Cut – Vergil does this move only after you take away about 60% of his life. He will DT and disappear, releasing Judgement Cut all over the place. Run/jump/dash away from them, andstay close to where you last saw Vergil. Once over, Vergil will reappear and be vulnerable for a whilet, so attack! I'll repeat this, guarding is always possible..

  7. Stinger – Vergil does this move by itself only in the harder modes. Always be on the alert to jump when you are close to him. But even if you get hit, it takes time for Vergil to put his sword away and Dante typically gets up faster than Vergil can recover, so hit him while you can.

Pattern:

  1. Vergil often starts the battle with Judgement Cut so counter him. Other times, he teleports behind you and tries to slash you a couple times before he teleports and performs Helm Breaker at you. Once you see him disappear, follow Avoid and Attack strategy #3 as written above.

  2. After a while Vergil will DT. At this time, DT'd Vergil will still perform the same moves as he does in human form, so counter Vergil as many times as you can to return him back to human form quickly. Use all of the Avoid and Attack strategies written above with only once difference - quickly jump away after you countered and hit him once. With Beowulf, 2~4 Killer Bees will be enough to turn him back into human form.

Reminder: For those who are inconfident in countering DT'd Vergil, remember to activate DT to reduce damage.

  3. After taking away about 50~60% of his life, Vergil will start going into super DT state (with the purple shield around him when he activates it). Vergil is highly aggressive in this state so don’t bother countering/attacking him. Concentrate on EVADING.

In this state, Vergil will perform Helm Breaker continuously for about 6~13 times depending on how many times you successfully avoid it. Dash/Sky Star or run to avoid them. In between his Helm Breakers, he also continues with some sword combos so Dash/Sky Star/run/jump away.

Another way to deal with this is to, yet again, guard with Royalguard. This will require some practice and getting used to to get the timing right. It will be risky if you're not confident. However, if you can master this, you'll be at a huge advantage.

  4. Once he’s done with super DT, he will turn back into human and be vulnerable for about 3 seconds, so attack!

  5. As a reminder, Vergil parries you once in a certain number of hits. If you can anticipate when he parries you, you can perform this little trick with Beowulf. The moment you hear him grunt, perform Straight but HOLD onto your button to charge. Watch for Vergil to put his guard down and release only then. If done in the right time, Vergil WILL take the hit without parrying you.

The moment he gets hit, shoot him with a gun, or do any quick Gunslinger move (like Gun Stinger). You can even do a guard (Royalguard) cancel instead if you'd like. To do this, after Vergil takes in the first Straight, guard immediately, then quickly perform Straight and HOLD onto your button again. Just like before, Vergil should attempt to parry you, so release Straight only after he puts his guard down, then repeat the entire procedure. (i.e. Straight > guard cancel > repeat) It is possible to replace guard cancel with Kalina Ann. (i.e. Straight > Bazooka > repeat)

  6. Useful note: Make use of DTE (DT Explosion) to inflict massive damage. You can do this by having at least 4 DT slots, and holding L1 until you see the slots turn red. Then when you're close to the enemy, release L1.

Useful note 2: Spamming Kalina Ann - Kalina Ann is slow at recovery, but you can speed it up a little by guard cancelling (Royalguard). Right after shooting, tap on O. If done with the right timing, you should see Dante go into the guard stance, and when you do, you can to shoot with Kalina Ann again. This can be repeated over and over. (This is the same as step 5 with Straight)

      [Dante Must Die mode]

  1. Typically, Vergil will either start the battle with Stinger or Judgement Cut. Iif it's Stinger, jump a little forward and his Stinger should stop right below you, then counter attack. If it's Judgement Cut, counter him by all means. It's the easiest way to counter him in this battle.

  2. Vergil will also perform Summoned Swords. He does this in both human and DT form. Don't bother countering him when the swords are still around, and wait for the them to go away before you attempt attacking again. Sword Storm (the swords circle you) can be easily dodged by jumping, and Blistering Swords (Vergil shoots them at you) can be dodged only by running towards the opposite direction.

  3. When going into super DT, Vergil now also summons his swords. Make use of the time he's DT-ing to taunt him and recover some DT. Trickster's Dash should easily avoid his chain of Helm Breakers but it's NOT reliable if Vergil does Stinger in between, so always look out for it and jump/Sky Star instead of Dash. If you prefer another way, there's always Royalguard. Guarding against Helm Breaker is awesome, but I won't suggest doing it if he has Spiral Swords protecting him.

  4. Sometimes, Vergil does Final Judgement Cut while his summoned swords still protect him. He can do this any time, even when shooting the swords at you. Usually, it's a good time to attack him when he's done but if his swords still protect him, try breaking them with Kalina Ann. Careful though, Vergil is able to release them anytime after Final Judgement Cut .

  5. When Vergil's health drops to below 15%, it's time for you to give it your very all! Blast out all the DT you have and use your strongest attacks (and Release with Royalguard) to get this battle over with (I strongly suggest Beowulf). You will need that extra damage and speed to finish him off for good or he'll find a chance to recover it all back, even when he only has 1 pixel of health left. Good luck.
