Favorite Anime

I've seen over 130+ anime series but it's not like I LOVE all of them. In here, I listed the anime that I've seen and liked, and that are worth mentioning, in chronological order.

Last updated: 6 October 2014

Fushigi Yuugi

Year produced: 1995
Genre:
Adventure / Romance / Fantasy
# of episodes:
52
Rating:

This is one of the very first few anime I've ever watched. I saw this back in 1999 when I came to the US for my first time. It was my sister who showed it to me and I got hooked pretty fast. I loved the comedy and adventure but the romance was quite annoying. Nevertheless, it's a great anime for shoujo anime lovers.
Cardcaptor Sakura

Year produced: 1998
Genre:
School / Romance / Magic
# of episodes:
70
Rating:

I first heard about this from a friend back in Singapore, and I finally saw it for the first time on TV one Saturday morning. The big-eyed girls and boys style isn't my thing but I did end up watching the entire series after borrowing the VCD from a friend when I went back to Indonesia for a month. It was pretty enjoyable despite the over-girliness.
Kyou Kara Ore Wa

Year produced: 1992
Genre:
School / Comedy
# of episodes:
7
Rating:

A short old anime but absolutely funny and memorable!! It is an OVA and has an abrupt and weird ending but I can never forget how much this anime made me laugh! I feel nostalgic even just thinking about it! Highly recommended for fun comedy anime lovers!
Cowboy Bebop

Year produced: 1998
Genre:
Sci-fi / Action / Comedy
# of episodes:
26
Rating:

I actually saw this entire series in the English dub. =.= I started watching this thru' some tapes a friend lent me and they were dubbed. Plus, at that time the anime rental store only had the dubbed ones so for me to continue watching the series I just had to endure it. A pretty good anime for all to watch. It's got a good balance of action, comedy and drama. No wonder it makes its name so easily here in the US.
Fake

Year produced: 1996
Genre:
Yaoi / Comedy
# of episodes:
1
Rating:

This is my 3rd yaoi anime. I first saw it when I happened to find it in the anime rental store and was shocked they actually had yaoi at all! I rented and watched immediately. It was dubbed, so the voices were weird but I LOVED the anime regardless! Later I managed to download the anime and watched it in Japanese. Great yaoi romance anime!! <3
Kizuna ~Koi no Kara Sawagi~

Year produced: 1994
Genre:
Yaoi / Drama
# of episodes:
1
Rating:

This one goes in line with Fake. An older but very enjoyable anime. It's got many sweet moments and some drama stuck in every corner. It's a short OVA but at least it's got a complete story with a good ending =) A must for all yaoi fans!
Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO)

Year produced: 2000
Genre:
School / Comedy
# of episodes:
48
Rating:

I first saw this in Singapore but I got to watch the entire series only after I came to the US. The main character Onizuka is just someone no anime fan can ever miss. A very fun character with a very enjoyable personality makes his anime fun and enjoyable as well. ^^
AD Police

Year produced: 1999
Genre:
Action / Sci-fi
# of episodes:
12
Rating:

I remember I watched and finished this anime in one sitting. I don't quite remember the story very well at this moment but I remember that I do have a good impression of it. The two main characters just can't get any better ^_^!!
Fruits Basket

Year produced: 2002
Genre:
Comedy / Drama
# of episodes:
24
Rating:

One of my top favorites, very funny and enjoyable. There isn't really a true plot until maybe near the end but each and every single episode is light hearted and fun. I guarantee it'll put a smile on your face for days. =D
Trigun

Year produced: 1998
Genre:
Sci-fi / Action / Comedy
# of episodes:
24
Rating:

I was lucky I got to watch this after borrowing the entire DVD set from an American friend. I think I watched it all in either one or two sittings. It was so fun spotting the Trigun black cat in every episode, I even wrote it down! A good anime with nice action, comedy and drama.
Get Backers

Year produced: 2002
Genre:
Action / Comedy
# of episodes:
49
Rating:

Man, I was once SOOO into this. O_o Now that I think of it I wonder why. It's a good anime and I like the artstyle and characters but I think the actual storyline wasn't actually that great. It's the one anime in which I actually LOVE the fillers more than the actual story episodes.
Hikaru No Go

Year produced: 2001
Genre:
School / Board game
# of episodes:
75
Rating:

I started watching this cos' I heard that a friend was very into it. And so I downloaded it and watched, and got pretty into it myself right around episode #16. The entire anime is about nothing but Go, an ancient board game. It gets very insanely detailed when it comes to how the game is played, which I have no interest in so I didn't pay attention to that. Strangely enough, the anime still managed to keep me interested. I recommend this only for those who're willing to give it a try.
Prince of Tennis

Year produced: 2001
Genre:
Sports / School / Comedy
# of episodes:
178 + more
Rating:

To the fangirls, this anime is more about the boys than the sport. =P There're 80~100 characters altogether and 90+% of them are boys. What more can a girl want? (Pst pst... yaoi.... XP) Now see why it's so popular? =P Anyway, this anime is one of those rare ones whose anime version is actually WAY better than the original manga. The art also looks better and got more humor, even really cute chibi-character filler episodes.
Full Metal Alchemist

Year produced: 2003
Genre:
Action / Adventure/ Comedy
# of episodes:
51
Rating:

It was my ex's younger brother who introduced me to this anime and I was into it for a while. The alchemy thing was entirely new to me so it was very interesting to begin with. It's got a mix of sad and funny moments, sometimes even dark or disturbing, but in the overall it is a good anime.
*Top 5 Best*  One Piece

Year produced: 1999
Genre:
Action / Adventure / Comedy
# of episodes:
519+ & ongoing
Rating:

BEST anime ever. The first episode may not be impressive, but it was full-on addiction after that. You must NEVER judge this anime by the (stylized) art, and definitely NOT the English dubbed version! People who cannot cross that line will never be able to appreciate this beyond-excellent anime. Not only is it hilarious, it's also touching it made me cry on several occasions. Of course, the neverending action is also something all action lovers will enjoy. Ultimately-highly recommended.

Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu

Year produced: 2003
Genre:
School / Comedy
# of episodes:
15
Rating:

This is definitely one of the most damn popular comedy anime ever even tho' it has fewer episodes. It's the parodical version of the actual series Full Metal Panic, and is certainly one to enjoy and laugh over for people of all ages. I saw it after someone over the net introduced it to me, and I'm glad he did. Highly recommended.
*Top 5 Best*  Samurai 7

Year produced: 2004
Genre:
Sci-fi / Action
# of episodes:
26
Rating:

For a long time this was my #1 anime, until I remember there's still One Piece, which is unbeatable (LOL). It has a unique mix of history and sci-fi, made with a combination of 2D and 3D animation. Samurai 7 is an animated version of the famous literary movie Seven Samurai by Kurosawa Akira, but which is unfortunately underappreciated. I really recommend all anime lovers to give it a try. T_T!

*Top 5 Best*  Slam Dunk

Year produced: 1993
Genre:
Sports / School / Comedy
# of episodes:
101
Rating:

The BEST sport anime I've seen, and my top 2 favorite of all time, standing right next to One Piece. (The reason why it's second to One Piece is cos' One Piece is still an ongoing series while Slam Dunk has ended well over 12 years ago) Despite how old this classic anime is, it is a bloody brilliant masterpiece! It got me interested enough to go watch a real NBA match!! O_o I may not be a real basketball fan but this anime opened my eyes and taught me a lot about it that I'd never have known otherwise. Full of enjoyable characters and comedy, Slam Dunk is a MUST for people who ever calls themselves an anime fan.

Yakitate Japan

Year produced: 2004
Genre:
Food / Comedy
# of episodes:
69
Rating:

An online friend from Singapore introed me to this, saying how funny it is for an anime entirely about BREAD. This will very easily get anyone into it cos' of how 'original' the theme is. Ultimately, watching this anime will help you learn a lot more about bread than the average person ever will. Hahaha! Full of comedy and educational value.
Monster

Year produced: 2004
Genre:
Drama
# of episodes:
74
Rating:

This is probably the deepest anime of any I've ever seen. A dark psychological thriller anime, Monster is a definite one to watch for people who like thinking deeply about a story. This is NOT a kid's anime and is actually very complex. Recommended for people who seek a NON typical, serious anime.
Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nocchi Guu

Year produced: 2001
Genre:
Comedy
# of episodes:
26 + 12 + 14
Rating:

A series broken into 3 seasons, this jungle anime is as funny as it goes! This is the ONLY anime in which my #1 favorite character is a GIRL!! Unfortunately, not knowing the Japanese language may actually cut down the humor in half since a lot of it comes from the girl whose language is just ridiculously hilarious. Nonetheless, this is a great stress reliever and a must watch for comedy lovers!
Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children

Year produced: 2005
Genre:
Action
# of episodes:
1 full movie
Rating:

I wondered if I should include this in here but heck, I suppose why not! This isn't exactly an anime, as you can see, but a fully 3D animated and rendered movie made for FF7 gamers. Cause of this, I will not recommend this for those who've not played the game, but otherwise, it's a definite must. The story's all right, but no one should miss such a beautifully fully rendered animation =D It's a good fan service movie.
Samurai Champloo

Year produced: 2004
Genre:
Action / Adventure / Comedy
# of episodes:
26
Rating:

I've heard about this for the longest time but never got around to watch it until a friend told me I really should. So I did, and yes, it is good. O_o It's got its own sense of humor, nice action and highly favorable characters, as expected from the makers of Cowboy Bebop =) Highly recommended.
Gakuen Heaven

Year produced: 2006
Genre:
Shounen-ai / School
# of episodes:
13
Rating:

I realized there's this new yaoi series one day when I had the urge to HAVE to watch yaoi all of a sudden after about 3 months of absence from anime. There're a few shounen-ai (soft yaoi) series so far but they all suck, seriously. Most yaoi/shounen-ai anime are also cheesy and typical, and this one's not all that different but it's not too bad ^^".
Ouran High School Host Club

Year produced: 2006
Genre:
School / Comedy
# of episodes:
26
Rating:

Like Fruits Basket, this one's a very enjoyable comedy anime recommended for all. Every single one of the characters is fun in their own way and would definitely grab your attention. It can be pretty addictive - once you start, it may be hard to stop. =P Mostly episodical. A good stress reliever.
Viewtiful Joe

Year produced: 2004
Genre:
Action / Comedy
# of episodes:
52 (?)
Rating:

Viewtiful Joe is based on the original Viewtiful Joe video game for the PS2. Made for young children, this anime is really silly and cheesy, but you'll be surprised at how enjoyable and funny it still is! Its plot can be explained in six words - Joe wants to save his girlfriend. It's a really straightforward story but man, it's just surprisingly enjoyable even for young adults. Unfortunately, it is practically impossible to find this anime in Japanese + subs anywhere, so I never got to finish it. (I'm only at ep 6)
Death Note

Year produced: 2006
Genre:
Thriller / Mystery / Fantasy
# of episodes:
37
Rating:

From the best manga ever written comes one of the best anime for people seeking a good suspense story. Sticking strictly close to the manga, Death Note's anime proves to be equally good so far. This is no typical suspense anime since it includes fictional aspects like death gods and the ability to kill just by writing on a notebook, but this is exactly why it is so unique. Highly recommended for all.
Nodame Cantabile

Year produced: 2007
Genre:
Music / Comedy / Romance
# of episodes:
23
Rating:

This is actually my very first orchestral music anime. It's refreshing, light-hearted and funny. Best of all, all the characters are enjoyable and fun to watch, including the female main character (which is a rarity for me LOL). As heterophobic as I am, the romance in this anime is still very much endurable, and it is sweet. So all you romance slash comedy suckers should totally love this. =P
  Antique Bakery

Year produced: 2008
Genre: Yaoi (soft) / Comedy / Slice-of-life
# of episodes: 12
Rating:

Officially the BEST shounen-ai hinty anime that exists today. Period. In a nutshell, Antique Bakery is about cakes and four guys, one of who is blatantly gay and immediately pounces on any guy his type. I think that's quite enough to get you started if you're truly a yaoi fan, so GO WATCH IT NOW!!!

*Top 5 Best* Gintama

Year produced: 2006
Genre:
Comedy / Parody / Action
# of episodes:
242
Rating:

Gintama is virtually one of the silliest anime series ever made. Basically, Gintama specializes in parody'ing Japanese anime, manga, movies, social and pop culture, history and everything else I can't recall at the moment. It does not have a specific plot or storyline hence the stories are mainly episodical accompanied by short arcs once in several episodes. You'll find that it's the episodical stories that are humorous while short arcs focus on more serious scenarios common in shounen anime. It will take someone of a certain anime otaku level to appreciate half of Gintama and its humor, while it takes a someone of a certain anime otaku level + raised in japan to be able to fully appreciate it. Therefore, I won't say I recommend this to everyone even though I love it to bits, but I'd say give it a try if you think you're otaku enough. Be a man. Take up the challenge >=P Mwahahaha!

 Tiger & Bunny

Year produced: 2011
Genre:
Supernatural / Comedy / Action
# of episodes:
25
Rating:

You can never tell from this silly title that this is an anime about super heroes whose daily super deeds are live broadcast on a reality TV show and endorsed by real big shot companies (e.g. Pepsi, Bandai) , which explains why their logos are labeled all over each of the superheroes. XD That's all you need to know really, the rest is self explanatory once you watch it. I got attracted simply from the sound of the title and that was enough for me. >=D A really enjoyable short series. *Major thumbs up* Recommended for everyone, especially girls. =P
Bakuman

Year produced: 2010
Genre:
Drama / Romance
# of episodes:
75
Rating:

A unique story coming from the artist and writer of Death Note. In summary, it is about two young boys whose dream is to become a successful manga artist (one writer/artist), depicting all their challenges and obstacles as well as the harsh reality of the Japanese manga industry, especially pertaining to Jack/Jump. It is highly enlightening and a definite must-watch for all manga fans.
  Ristorante Paradiso

Year produced: 2009
Genre: Slice-of-life / Romance / Cooking
# of episodes: 11
Rating:

Yet another cooking/restaurant/cafe series, but with a unique bunch of elderly gentlemen with glasses instead!! XD I love the art/style of the men in here, it's just sooooo VERY rare to have an anime feature elderly people in this fashion. This is also the only reason why I watched this despite the (hetero) romance. It would have been perfect had it been yaoi. XD!!!
*Top 5 Best* Yowamushi Pedal
Year produced: 2013
Genre:
Sports / Comedy / School
# of episodes:
38 and awaiting next season
Rating:

The first and only series to feature road bicycle racing. It is both educational and fun without relying on 'unrealistic abilities' and ALL the characters are highly likable. No two characters look the same and they have very strong individuality. The races are exciting and the comedy is everywhere. HIGHLY recommeded for EVERYONE.
 Psycho-Pass

Year produced: 2014
Genre:
Crime / Thriller/ Psychological / Sci-Fi
# of episodes:
22 and awaiting next season
Rating:

Set in the future, their world runs by a system known as Sibyl where every single resident's psyche is measured and categorized into 4 different levels of potential threat, even if the person has not committed any crime. Depending on the level, one is either sent for theraphy or on-the-spot elimination. Those who fail the therapy but are not high enough in threat for elimination are labeled as latent criminals, who are either imprisoned or made to work as Enforcers, who are essentially 'police dogs' that sniff out other latent criminals due to their likemindedness. Psycho-Pass follows the story of a rookie Inspector and a team of Enforcers who eventually come face to face with peculiar-minded criminals who challenge the Sibyl system and question the team's moralities and resolve. Recommended for those who appreciate deep, thought provoking stories.

Tokyo Ghoul

Year produced: 2014
Genre:
Action / Drama / Horror / Psychological / Supernatural
# of episodes:
12 and awaiting next season
Rating:

A dark story of an innocent boy turned half Ghoul (which are man-eating human-like beings) over one unfortunate event involving a date with a female ghoul who tried to eat him. Realizing what he has become, he struggles with life as he learns to interact with ghoul society and its gruesome complications while hiding his new identity from humans. A perfect blend of action, psychology and drama. Also considerably thought provoking.
