Old Games Played

These are games played when I was (very) young, years ago, and which I don't own. Many of these are a big part of my childhood. ^_^

This is the first video game I ever played in my life when I was 5. It was way full of memories. I remember that I would sit with my brother and watch him play for hours. I played it for a bit too but was never good at it. Even just thinking about this game makes me feel highly nostalgic. A great game then and a great game always.

I played this at a younger cousin's place. He had a Nintendo 64 and once in a LONG time when my family would take me to visit my cousin and his family, he would sometimes invite me to play games with him. I remember he was way competitive and would get so pissed if he lost, but I was never good anyway. ^^"
Donkey Kong Country

Console: Super Nintendo
Age played: ~9
Obsessivity: Moderate

I played this at a close younger cousin's place back in Indonesia. Very rarely I would be allowed to go to his place and we'd play all the video games he had. This was his favorite so we played it together, tho' always losing to some harder stages. Man... it was great memories...
Xmen VS Street Fighter
Maker: Capcom
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 1996
Console: Arcade
Age played: 11
Obsessivity: High

Now THIS is the game that got me started playing all other games in the arcade, all thanks to my cousin, the very same one I played Donkey Kong with. He was into fighting games and he introduced me to those he played, starting with this one. My oh my, you don't know all the things I'd do just to cheat my grandma so that I can go to the arcade. I remember always getting caned by my grandma when she found out. Hahaha! Great memories indeed!
Marvel Vs Street Fighter
Maker: Capcom
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 1997
Console: Arcade
Age played: 12
Obsessivity: Moderate

Another one of those fighting games that I used to play. Never really knew how to play it tho', I just played it anyway, like the noobiest player ever. I remember I could barely perform a hadouken properly, but even so I could still beat some stages. Hahaha! All the button mashing was great memories =P All for Ken I tell ya.

Year released: 1998
Console: Arcade
Age played: 13
Obsessivity: Low
Difficulty: ---

I bought a 40 volume Hong Kong comic for this one and loved it a lot. From the comic, I decided that I should try out the game and so I did, even though as always I dunno how to play. It's weird how I'd play games I have no idea how to play, all just to see how the game is like. ^^"
Street Fighter III New Generation
Maker: Capcom
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 1997
Console: Arcade
Age played: 13
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: ---

This is the game I bought an entire 150 volume Hong Kong comic for. To be honest I wasn't even that into the game. The game was all right since I couldn't really play, and only the comic interested me. I remember I was so into Alex then and would do anything to see him.
Marvel Vs Capcom

Console: Arcade
Age played: 13

One of the other fighting games I used to play after being obsessed with Xmen Vs Street Fighter. This time my favorite was Spiderman just cos' he's got really slick moves and cos' my cousin used him often. Believe it or not, I didn't even realize that Spiderman isn't Japanese-made. =P
Capcom Vs SNK
Maker: Capcom
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 2000
Console: Arcade
Age played: 14
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Hard

This was a dream come true for someone who was obsessed with King of Fighters and Street Fighter. It had always been in my dreams for me to see a clash between characters from both games, so this came out as a giant surprise. Strangely enough, even so I wasn't much into playing it and would watch only from time to time.
Rival Schools
Maker: Capcom
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 1998
Console: Playstation
Age played: 16
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Moderate

I played this game at my boyfriend's place back then and had him teach me all he knew. Hahaha! Playing this game using the style my boyfriend taught me wasn't hard altho' that means I can never surpass him. =P I played this game only because I got into the latest Rival Schools game - Project Justice, which was available only in the arcade.
Project Justice

This still remains as the one and only 3D fighting game that I LOVE and would LOVE to play again. Unfortunately it's only available in the arcade or the Dreamcast. It was my boyfriend who introduced me to this game back then and I would learn everything he knew. It became the only game I was confident in and would even challenge others.
King of Fighters 96
Maker: SNK
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 1996
Console: Arcade
Age played: 11
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Moderate
Status: Complete
Grade:
This game is the beginning of my King of Fighters history, all thanks to my younger cousin yet again. Having a very different battle system from all those Capcom fighting games I've been playing, this game was quite hard for me to adapt to, not that I really knew how to play any game anyway. =P But starting from KOF 96, I just continued... year after year, playing KOF, marking the start of my KOF obsession.
King of Fighters 97
Maker: SNK
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 1997
Console: Arcade
Age played: 12
Obsessivity: High
Difficulty: Moderate
Status: Complete
Grade:
This game was when I truly got obsessed with KOF, and when I really learnt how to play the game. I was obsessed with it for a very long time, spanning I think 3 years from ages 12-14. 'Ironically', this is also the game that got me knowing my boyfriend =P It's also the reason I begged my father to buy me a Playstation, even with an arcade joystick specially for this. =P
King of Fighters 98
Maker: SNK
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 1998
Console: Arcade
Age played: 14
Obsessivity: High
Difficulty: Moderate
Status: Complete
Grade:
The next installment of the KOF series, and of course, as usual I got obsessed with it. This was also when I started to regularly play and practice combos and such as taught by my boyfriend. With the additional characters and all, it wasn't long before I forgot all about KOF 97. =P
King of Fighters 2000
Maker: SNK
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 2000
Console: Arcade
Age played: 15
Obsessivity: High
Difficulty: Moderate
Status: Complete
Grade:
This is the climax of my KOF gaming history. I loved this game so much I'd touch almost no other game but Project Justice. Even today, KOF 2000 still stands as my #1 top favorite KOF game. Considering how much and often I play this game, unfortuantely I was still pretty average and would lose to all the KOF girl gamer friends that I know. ^^"
King of Fighters 2001
Maker: Playmore
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 2001
Console: Arcade
Age played: 16
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Moderate
Status: Incomplete
Grade:
This came out as a huge disappointment to many of the KOF fans. I was one of them. First of all, the new art style for the illustrations were just way too different and strange for most of the fan's taste. The gameplay wasn't as fun as 2000 as well. So even after this came out I still stuck with 2000 and seldom touch this altho' I'd watch others play it.
King of Fighters 2002
Maker: Playmore
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 2002
Console: Arcade
Age played: 18
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Moderate
Status: Complete
Grade:
Since I flew to the US after KOF 2001, I never got to play this game until I finally went back to Singapore for a visit when I was 18, and by then even KOF 2003 had come out. It was a strange moment for me since it was the first time in 1.5 years that I was able to touch KOF in an arcade again. I never got to play a lot of this even though I have it on an emulator now. It feels much like KOF 98, just better, and I do think it's a nice game regardless of my inactiveness.
King of Fighters 2003
Maker: Playmore
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 2003
Console: Arcade
Age played: 18
Obsessivity: Quite high
Difficulty: Moderate

This game came out right at the time I went back to Singapore for a visit at the end of year 2003. I played it for the first time just a few days before I had to come back to the US and I got pretty addicted, all thanks to the new character Ash Crimson. He had very fun moves, and even tho' it was the first few times I tried the game I was able to take out a few challengers' characters. Hahaha!! I couldn't be happier. =P
Mark of the Wolves
Maker: SNK
Type: 2D Fighting
Year released: 1999
Console: Arcade
Age played: 16
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Hard
Status: Complete

I played this game for the first time in an arcade when I was 16. As always I played it even tho' I didn't know how to. Even my boyfriend's guidance didn't help me. =P I was never really into the Fatal Fury series anyway so this game never really caught my attention except for the main character. I finally played it a little more and beat it after countless continues on an emulator using the PC.
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

I forgot who taught me how to play this exactly but it could have just been my boyfriend. I knew it had been out for a long time but I never touched it until later. It was fun, but it isn't really all that fun without a human opponent ya know. I played it by myself on the PC A LOT once and was able to clear even the master difficulty mode but after that I don't really play it anymore until some random times in the US.
Pocket Fighter

I first discovered this in the arcade, of course, and would play it cos' it was so ridiculous. I would be laughing with my friends at all the weird moves they do as I continue to mash the buttons. I finally learnt how to play it like a year after and still enjoyed it even tho' I wasn't good at it.
Parappa the Rapper
Maker: NanaOnSha

I played this when I came to the US for my first time back in 1999 for a trip with my grandma. It was either my brother or sister who told me to try it. It was a really short game but nevertheless it was fun! The music totally made me laugh, especially the first one with the onion kungfu master guy. Great memories.
Dance Dance Revolution

I'm not actually sure if it's this one or some other one but I played it back in 1999 in the US. It was my very first DDR experience and I was mostly playing it with my sister in California. Of course, it was using the controller but still it was very fun. It got me to know the Paranoia song. It's still my best favorite DDR song today.
King of Fighters Kyo
Maker: SNK
Type: RPG
Year released: 1999
Console: Playstation
Age played: 14
Obsessivity: Low
Difficulty: ---

I learnt of this from a preview in another game I was playing back in Indonesia. Immediately I got it from a store and was shocked to find that it was entirely in Japanese. I played it nonetheless, not understanding a single thing, and gave up pretty soon. ^^" I don't think I'll try it again even tho' I know Japanese now.
Tekken 3
Maker: Namco
Type: 3D Fighting
Year released: 1998
Console: Playstation
Age played: 14
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Medium
Status: Complete
Grade:
Tekken 3 was one of the free games that I got from getting a Playstation. So I tried it even tho' I didn't know a thing about it and I actually got to like it. It started out with the characters Xiao Yu and Hwoarang, as anyone would have guessed =P I'd play it for days and practice combos and such, but the obsession didn't last very long.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos
Maker: Fox Interactive, Argonaut Games
Type: Platform
Year released: 1997
Console: PC
Age played: 14
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Hard
Status: Incomplete
Grade:
This is one of the first and only PC games that I've played. My cousin taught me how to play it and so I tried. I dunno if it's just me but seriously, dude, this game's HARD. It took me a long time anda lot of effort to get to like world 3 and I sort of stopped there and never continued. It'd have been a lot more fun if it was half as hard. ^^"
Worms 2
Maker: Team17, Atari

Console: PC
Age played: 14
Obsessivity: Moderate

Now WHO doesn't know this game?? This is like classic!! Real awesome and absolutely fun!! It's sad to say I never really got to play it a lot since it wasn't my game and my cousin wouldn't really let me play it, but man, it was great memories! This game's way too fun and funny, absolutely enjoyable. Of course, it's really only as fun when you play it with someone. Absolutely wonderful memories.
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Maker: Naughty Dog

Console: Playstation
Age played: 17
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Medium
Status: Complete(?)

I played this after coming to the US since my sister has this from my brother who left his Playstation here. I don't actually quite remember if I finished this game but I'm quite sure I did. I know I didn't complete it a 100% since it's really very hard to do so, but I should have passed all the 25 stages. A classic Crash Bandicoot game.
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
Maker: Naughty Dog

Console: Playstation
Age played: 14
Obsessivity: High

My very first Crash Bandicoot game and I was in love. Even my parents enjoyed watching me play! In fact, it's the ONLY game they'll sit down to watch me play! This happened to be one of the free games I got from getting my Playstation and I'm glad I got it. It marked the start of my liking towards platform games. I'm also proud to say I complete this game a full 100% with ALL crystals, sapphires and all collected. It took FOREVER. I started when I was 14 and finally completed it fully at age 17.

I played this only at my boyfriend's place. It was damn fun! We'd play it and race each other or his brother for hours and that was really all of the game that I played. There's a story mode but I don't really play it since it's not as fun without a human opponent. I can't beat my boyfriend, as usual, but I was confident at this game. Even in the US I was confident I could beat any of my friends. =P
Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Maker: Naughty Dog

Console: Playstation
Age played: 17

This was one of the first PS2 games I've ever played, and it was on my brother-in-law's machine. I was actually only watching them play at first, but then I decided that I wanted to play too and so I did, and ended up finishing my bro-in-law's game for him XP And then I replayed the game from start to end by myself and fully completed it a 100%. I was proud of it =) It was fun, a great game, and a legendary start for the Jak series.
Suikoden I
Maker: Konami
Type: RPG

Console: Playstation
Age played: 17
Obsessivity: Moderate
Difficulty: Easy

I started by playing Suikoden II first, and so when I saw that a friend had this I asked to borrow it. A very short RPG but like its sequel it's actually fun. It's the classical 2D RPG but no one says 2D RPGs are bad. It's not as great as Suikoden II but it was still good. It reminds me of the first year I came to the US back in 2002.
Suikoden II

This!! THIS, is my VERY FIRST RPG EVER. Believe it or not I used to dislike RPG, thinking that the turn based battle concept is just ridiculously stupid. But this! This game made me take my word back. I still remember very clearly that it was one afternoon when my brother was booting up every single game he had just to watch the opening cutscenes. When he boot up Suikoden II he got a call from someone and so while waiting for him to be finished I started messing with the game, and surprisingly I thought "Hey! This is FUN!!" That was the beginning of it all. I've played this game SO MANY times, I can bet it's as many as 7 times from start to end, but I never got to complete it a 100%. I did so only after I completed Suikoden 1 and then used the save file to load on to Suikoden II. I finally completed it fully at age 17 in the US. If not for this game I'd have never played FF7.
Final Fantasy VII
Maker: Squaresoft

Console: Playstation

My 2nd RPG. Why did I choose to play this of all other RPGs? It's not really becos' I want to or think it's that great or something, to be honest. It's becos I already knew about it from my cousin. =P Before I played this game myself, I often watched my cousin play it. I even knew certain things already before I played it myself, and I was pretty familiar with the characters. I didn't play it only because I didn't think I could handle RPGs. But later I tried it, after completing Suikoden II, so that I could play my 2nd RPG. I forgot whose copy it was that I borrowed cos' I never had my own, and man, I can swear I played this game nearly as many times as Suikoden II. One time in Indonesia when I replayed it again I finished it in 2 days. I even played it again from the start after coming to the US, and for the first time attempted the chocobo quest even tho' I failed to succeed. A great game filled with sweet memories.
Final Fantasy VIII

Back then, I always thought FF8 had the most complicating configuration system, and was afraid to try it myself becos' I just couldn't understand how it works. Even with my boyfriend's guidance it took me forever to understand. I first played it together with my boyfriend at his place, but since I played under his supervision 90% of the time it's technically him who's playing it, not me. And we never really got to finish it for some reason. I finally played this on my own at age 19 in the US, after 2 years of total gaming absence. It felt nostalgic just playing it, and I even got to beat Omega weapon myself, and even without using Squall =P Even now, I'm still proud of it =) A nice game in the overall.
Final Fantasy IX
Maker: Squaresoft

Year released: 2000
Console: Playstation
Age played: 15 or 16
Obsessivity: Moderate

I played this when I was back in Indonesia for the break. FF9 just came out not too long ago and so I got it and started right away. It was my 3rd RPG and I thought it was pretty fun. I played it continuously for days and would call long distance to my boyfriend when I'm really stuck since I didn't know of the existence of online walkthroughs =P Pretty crazy huh? Now that I think of it it was not the bestest game but nonetheless it was a pretty nostalgic memory of my teenagehood.

I saw this while game shopping back in Indonesia a number of years ago. This one's a big improvement from its older game and I enjoyed it alot. However, there are still too few songs and to be honest there aren't many that I really like as to my tastes.
